They Came to Observe, They Left Transformed
For many high school students interested in medicine, internships often mean observing from the sidelines—watching procedures, following doctors, and learning about healthcare from a distance. This June, Beijing United Family Hospital offered Grade 10–12 students a different experience: a five-day Medical Immersion Program designed to take them beyond traditional shadowing and into the real world of healthcare.
Rather than a traditional shadowing experience, where students simply observe from the sidelines, the program offered an interactive introduction to clinical skills, medical technology, patient care, and the many different roles that make a hospital function.
Building the Foundations of Healthcare
The program began with hospital orientation, where students learned about professional conduct, patient safety, and the standards required in a healthcare environment. They were introduced to the importance of teamwork, communication, and responsibility, skills that are essential for anyone considering a future in medicine.
Students also completed practical, scenario-based first aid training and earned their Certified First Aid certification. Through hands-on exercises, they learned how to respond confidently in emergency situations and gained skills that extend beyond the hospital setting.
Exploring Medicine Through Hands-On Learning
Throughout the week, students moved beyond theory and experienced different aspects of modern healthcare through workshops led by experienced physicians and medical professionals.
They explored how technology is transforming medicine through sessions focused on Artificial Intelligence in healthcare and the future of surgery. Some students had the opportunity to experience robotic surgery demonstrations firsthand, gaining insight into how advanced technology is supporting surgeons and improving patient care.
Students also participated in Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine workshops, learning that healthcare is not only about treating disease, but also about helping patients recover, regain function, and return to the activities they love.
Hands-on laboratory sessions allowed participants to apply their knowledge in a practical environment, giving them a deeper appreciation of the precision and skill required in medicine.
Developing the Skills Behind Great Healthcare Professionals
Becoming a healthcare professional requires more than scientific knowledge. Medicine also demands resilience, communication, and the ability to care for oneself while caring for others.
During the program, students participated in workshops focused on resilience, nutrition, sleep science, learning strategies, and peak performance. These sessions helped them understand the habits and mindset that support success in demanding academic and professional environments.
Experiencing Life Inside the Hospital
The highlight of the program was the opportunity for students to step into the daily rhythm of a working hospital.
Rather than simply taking a tour, students joined clinical teams and explored different departments, gaining insight into patient care, medical
decision-making, and collaboration between healthcare professionals.
Students had the opportunity to rotate through departments including Family Medicine, Surgery, Dentistry, Cardiology, Internal Medicine, and other specialties. These experiences allowed them to see firsthand how different teams contribute to a patient’s healthcare journey.
Learning Directly From Healthcare Leaders
Throughout the program, students also connected with physicians, nurses, department leaders, and hospital administrators through informal discussions and physician lunches.
These conversations gave students the opportunity to ask honest questions about careers in healthcare, medical education, and the challenges and rewards of working in medicine. Beyond discussing professional pathways, healthcare professionals shared personal experiences and advice gained from years on the front lines of patient care.
Reflecting, Presenting, and Looking Ahead
The program concluded with students presenting their reflections and key takeaways to hospital leadership, parents, and teachers.
The presentations allowed students to share how their understanding of medicine had evolved throughout the week while developing valuable communication and presentation skills. Each participant received a Certificate of Completion recognizing their participation in the program.
A Different Kind of Medical Experience
What makes the Beijing United Family Hospital Medical Immersion Program unique is that students are able to experience medicine for themselves.
They move beyond observation by participating in hands-on activities. They learn that healthcare is not only about science and technology, but also about compassion, teamwork, and human connection. And they gain direct access to the physicians and healthcare professionals who can share what the journey into medicine truly looks like.

“I came into the program thinking dentistry was just about teeth. But during my rotation, I saw how oral health connects to everything: heart disease, diabetes, even mental well-being. The precision required for surgical extractions and the way the dental team coordinated with other departments made me realize: a dentist is a physician of the whole mouth, not just a tooth mechanic. That changed everything for me.”
“It was during one morning in Internal Medicine, watching a senior doctor sit beside a patient who was scared and confused. She didn’t just check his vitals; she held his hand, looked him in the eye, and said, ‘I’m here with you.’ That is not in textbooks. That was pure humanity. I learned that before you can treat the disease, you have to see the person.”

Winter Medical Immersion Program
Following the success of two Medical Immersion Programs, Beijing United Family Hospital is now accepting applications for the upcoming Winter Break Medical Immersion Program.
Designed for high school students who are interested in healthcare, the five-day program will provide an immersive experience covering clinical skills training, hands-on workshops, department rotations, physician mentorship, and opportunities to learn directly from healthcare professionals.
If you are a student who is curious about medicine and wants to explore healthcare beyond the classroom, this program offers a unique opportunity to experience the profession firsthand.
To apply, students should prepare a CV and a motivation letter explaining their interest in healthcare. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a face-to-face interview.
